Peak Beard reached in London market

The London insurance market may have reached "peak beard", according to industry insiders. The more beards there are among employees, the less tolerant senior managers become, according to scientists. When "peak beard" frequency is reached, the pendulum of tolerance swings back toward clean shaven chins - a trend we may be witnessing now, the scientists say.

Beyond peak beard. Way beyond.

Lloyd's chief etiquette officer Oliver Corby-Press recently completed a new survey of visitors to the market counting the numbers of beards worn by visitors and market workers. His findings confirm the scientific research.

Corby-Press made his first beard count five years ago and has repeated the exercise every year since. "For a number of years the market had only one beard and he was on the 12th floor. This year I counted several men wearing beards, one of whom seemed to be wearing two or more beards," Corby-Press told riskBITZ. "For me and my colleagues in the Facial Performance Department that's tantamount to Peak Beard."

Corby-Press said he is preparing a letter which will be circulated around the market warning managing agents and brokers that there is an oversupply of facial hair and that a cull is necessary.

"We are not hippies or pirates, we are insurance professionals and have to look like insurance professionals. Next thing you know people will be wanting to take their ties off or wear brown shoes."
